Reset Password Component for Joomla 1.5, 2.5 and 3

This component is now finally available for Joomla 2.5 and Joomla 3.

I have gotten a bit frustrated with the Joomla reset password functions.
In Joomla 1.5 there was a horrendous invalid token bug. And in Joomla 3.2 the reset password function is broken altogether.

Besides that, I never really liked that users had to copy and paste the token manually.

Out of this frustration I created a new component that handles the reset password process. There is also a plugin that needs to be activated.

When the plugin is activated, it attempts to replace the Joomla default forgot password link with a link to this component.

This was mainly written for my own Joomla websites but I decided to provide it as a free download in the hope that it might be useful for others as well.

How is this module affected during a Joomla upgrade? It seems our users are back to entering a token when I upgraded from 1.5.22 to 1.5.23- is this because I need to reinstall this component and plugin?

shouldn’t be any issues when upgrading joomla – perhaps you need to check if the plugin is still activated

Hi alpher – I can only assume you tried to reset admin passwords – component only works with registered frontend users.

Hi Mark,

I just downloaded and installed this today on a website I run for my church, and it worked well on testing. Thanks! One thing I noticed though that I don’t like. In the default Joomla reset password function, the email that is sent with the token code sends from the email address designated in the global server settings, but shows the designated “From Name” specified in the global server settings. For example, the “Mail From” address is my email address, but the “From Name” is lakevilleucc.com. In your component/plugin, it apparently doesn’t reference the “From Name”. I would prefer that my users see the “From Name” instead of my email address. I tried looking to see if there were any parameters I could specify this in, but there are no parameters to modify. Is there any way to make that happen?

The passwords are not being sent to email for reset. This is a registered (test) email and not the super administrator. What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance for all your help!

Thanks for this great extension!. It was working perfectly on my J1.5.23 site until I had to activate the MooTools Upgrade plugin for another extension. Now it’s back to loading the token password reset again. Any suggestion on how to make it work with MooTools Upgrade enabled?

Hi Richard

Hmm – the resetpassword component is not using any javascript.
I could only guess the the other plugin you needed mootools for is changing the login module so that the reset password plugin can not replace the link anymore.
I use the mootools upgrade and have no problems at all.

THANKS for confirming mootools upgrade isn’t conflicting with Reset Password. I’ll check into the other extension Parainvite to see if it’s changing the login module.

Hello I have problem in Rock Theam. Now I am sure 100 % that is problem with template. When I use link for lost password is come token to my email. When insert this token is write: “Your password reset confirmation failed because the token was invalid” but token is ok. I find in one Joomla forum that can be template, and I try to share template for another and token is working. Its different and strange, that on another template is show me field for user name and for token. On Kinabalu template is show just field for token. Please somebody can help me. Thank you

Sorry I’m not familiar with the Rock Theam template.
I guess the template is using a different javascript based login module and the reset password plugin doesn’t work with this.

I realy hope to get the module working. Love the thinking of how to reset password.
I have innstaled the module and i use Yooo loging module for virtuemart.
When turning on the pluging, ang going to the site to test. When i hit the resett password button. The page just reloads and i am not going anywhere.

This is a norwegian site, do i need som tralation to get things working?
I also you SEF url aceSEF is this maybe a problem?

What is the url to the page that i enter email adress for password resetting? Maybe i can make a SEF url and test?

I got the component and it is working fine, good job, thanks. However, I would like to edit the message to put my own “Please enter…..” and in addition the submit button is shifted far to the right. How I can modify this?

First I want to Thank you for This Component
I want to add a Hebrew Transaltion olso and I have A little problem….
After I change the password is Redirecting me to Entee My user name and Password
After I put The user name and Password I Get A messeage That the Minimum Password is 4 Charters and beside that I get an error link

I hope that you will be able to assist me with that problem

I am have trouble receiving the email. I decided to reload the component and plugin I got this message with the plugin. I tried to use the joomla installer to upload:
JFolder::files: Path does not point to a valid folder or the folder has been deleted.

Hi, all my clients agree the default password reset in Joomla is a terrible thing for anyone to have to deal with, it needs it’s own 24/7 helpline and counselling service.

I don’t suppose this extension still works in Joomla 2.5?

This component is great, but It seems if the user inputs their email address on the “forgot your password” page, on submit it loads a blank article. How can I override the page after submit is pressed to tell the user to check their email?

Hi it will show a system message instead of a blank page – make sure your template allows for system messages.

Hi… I really am looking forward to use your plugin. However, when I install the component and the plugin and later activate it the reset password link will just be empty. It’ll redirect me to the home url (villapanonews.com).

Can you please give me any hint on what could be the problem? I noticed some comments that some templates will over ride the joomla com_user component… could that be an explanation?

I love this little component/plugin! It’s awesome.

One little request for the next updates – the ability to select where the user is redirected when they click “Submit”.

Why?

Well I’m using a template that allows me to ‘kill’ the content position on my homepage, giving me more flexibility in layout etc.

Because the user is redirected to my homepage, they are not getting the system message.

If I had the option to redirect them to a little custom advice page, then they would see the warnings, and I could offer them advice, how to’s, etc.

to include say “/index.php/resetmessage”

Would that take me to that page? In other words, s this the code that’s redirecting the browser after “submit”?

Hi Ray

Yeah I think you could modify the code in this place to return users there.
Give it a try. At the moment it’s redirecting to the page the user came from.
Make sure you replace all php code with just a hardcoded url and you should be fine.

I tried installing it under Joomla 2.5 and the user gets sent an email with no URL to click on in the email. Any ideas what the problem is? It also does not register a reset attempt in the log.

Hi – it seems that it wont work with joomla 2.5
So many things have changed there. Haven’t had time yet to test it and make it compatible with joomla 2.5
Might look into it over the next few weeks.

I’ve used this for a long time and lately noticed it no longer is the default means for obtaining lost passwords… the default now is the one with tokens even with the extension abled.
